The Met Gala 2022 took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where fashion was celebrated by the best of the A-listers in Hollywood, and this year’s theme is the continuation of Lexicon of fashion – In America: An Anthology of Fashion, where the glided age fashion in America was explored and the celebrities showed and showed big. The red carpet was filled with the understanding of the theme look. The ‘Glided age glamour’ features Women’s dresses made with a combination of many textiles, like satin, silk, velvet, and fringe, all adorned with over-the-top textures like lace, bows, frills, and ruffles, most of the time finished with hats adorned with florals, e.t.c. and the men in black tie, trousers with matching jacket made with velvet, satins, e.t.c.
Zooming forward to now, the takes on the ‘glided age glamour’ has had a lot of modern updates, showing how much fashion has grown since then. In this age, the hats are now made with crystals, florals, oversized, e.t.c. take ‘Lala’ for example, her modern sexy take on the glided glamour screams 21st century, compared to the 19th century where the only sexiness in their outfits was the cleavage and the cinched waist. She showed off her waist with modern cutouts and her legs with a long slit finish (designed by Lacquan Smith) which can be a bit controversial compared to the way fashion was very conservative but sophisticated back then. SZA is another modern story to adore, she finished the look with latex leggings and oversized hats not ignoring her sexy hot pink ball gown, Precious Lee’s sheer corseted gown by Altuzarra is just saying 19th century in the 21century, e.t.c.
In continuation of the modern age take, did you notice Normani in her all-black velvet balloon co-ords?, what about Nicki Minaj’s urban athleisure take of the ‘Glided Age Glamour’? I mean if there were rappers in that age, Nicki Minaj’s story says it’s the way to go, after all, the theme look is about voluminosity and facilitators. And if there were socialites in that era, well, Kylie Jenner is telling them how to do it with her Off-White athleisure look too.
A more conservative take on the 19th-century theme look will be that of Jessica Chastain in a red sequin look by Gucci finished with a turban, Sarah Jessica Parker in a more muted take by Christopher John Rogers using her floral headpiece as a pop of color, Blake Lively’s take by Versace can not be ignored, Billy Elish who also told the story wearing a muted look by Gucci (a gown made with upcycled materials), Laura Harrier in an ornate gown by Glemaud, I can’t help but adore Kaia Gerber’s shimmery rustic gown by Alexander McQueen e.t.c.
Another modern take on this theme look on the men’s side will be Franklin Leonard who wore a sculptural jacket with matching trousers and a white tuxedo bow tie, Riz Ahmed who also wore a bomber tuxedo jacket matching his trousers finished with calf boots and the trousers tucked in the boots paying homage to the immigrant workers in that era, Tom Ford’s look cannot be ignored whose take can be described with one word modern conservativeness e.t.c.
