If you don’t know, the ‘Barbiecore’ style look is the trend of the season. It’s a look where you wear head-to-toe pink displaying the barbie aesthetics, and do not forget that Pepto Bismol pink is the true colour on the table – Hot Pink, although bubblegum pink and fuchsia pink are also counted as part of the barbie aesthetics.
Many designers like Valentino were not afraid to make an entire runway a ‘Barbiecore’ look from models dressed like what barbie would wear to a runway designed like where barbie would live during its Fall 2022 presentation. This trend has taken over the world and the red carpet won’t stop wearing it from Kim Kardashian to Saweetie.
The ‘Barbiecore’ style trend has been dated back to 1959 and stars like Nicki Minaj actually jump-start their music career with the barbie aesthetics.
The silhouettes range from mini dresses to long flared gowns and of course not without the sparkles and frocks including bows. Although the colour serves as the major part of the ‘Barbiecore’ style trend, it is good to know it was also part of the 80s and aughts style trend.
Hailey Bieber’s nostalgic Halloween costume in 2016 and Kacey Musgraves Moschino moment at the Met Gala in 2019 stamps the style trend as approved.
The doll has so much influence in the fashion industry that the 2022 Grammy Awards red carpet was all things Barbiecore looks, from Saweetie’s eye-catching ensemble to Justin Bieber’s bright fuchsia beanie.
This brings us to Kim Kardashian’s recent red carpet look, the reality TV star, businesswoman and mom, was spotted at the Baby2Baby Gala 2022 red carpet wearing the ‘Barbiecore style look, she wore Balenciaga designed look (from the brand’s SS’23 collection) which we love just because it’s a head-toe pink look. The look featured a bow-detailed gown with a train finished with a pair of pointy-toe boots and a top handle bag all in a hot pink colour tone.
The only reservation we have here at Covet is that the gown with bow detailing is so untidy, and looks like she was wearing a rag, which we don’t think it’s the overall vibe she was trying to portray. We believe she’s trying to portray a sexy edgy look, Yes, Kim likes edgy looks in urban, and couture but this gown is not just it, the look can’t be compared to the Icy Blue gown worn at the 2022 Oscar after-party without the sunglasses of course.
If she’s trying to wear the ‘Barbiecore’ look with the celebration of bow details, we at Covet believe the Valentino Crepe Couture Short Dress With Bow Detail would have rescued the day. The dress is different keeping all the bow detailing on the side and sleeves of the dress with a sneak peek of her beautiful skin on the side. She can simply finish this look with a pair of beautiful pointy-toe pumps like that of Jimmy Choo and a pair of 60 denier pink tights, the same pink micro top handle bag is fit for the Valentino dress and she’s golden.
The bow detail and the extreme cutouts from Valentino’s dress are so tidy and sophisticatedly kept to the side of the body, ‘Oh so classy’ while Balenciaga’s dress is so badly designed, although we’re in the era of ‘Bad Fashion’, I believe the best way to wear it is the Valentino’s way.
Alternatively, to save money and just because it’s about style, Pretty Little Thing has beautiful edgy takes on hot pink dresses, the Pretty Little Thing Hot Pink Swirl Midi Dress for example is a beautiful edgy option that can be worn and styled similarly to the first option. Since Kim likes edgy, the edginess will be the swirly cups (Check out the mood board of the recommended styles to Kim below).
