The 46th presidential inauguration was a very quiet and subtle one due to the global pandemic. There were people wearing masks and keeping the 2m social distancing rule e.t.c. Although the ceremony was very low key, the fashion statements made by the FLOTUS and guests were loud.
The First lady of the United States – Dr. Jill Biden was seen holding the hand of her husband- President Joe Biden in a satire designed by a an American Newyork based designer – Markarian by Alexandra O’Neil. It was a blue tweed coat with dark blue velvet collar and cuffs. The coat was worn on top of a fairly form-fitted dress with a chiffon bodice and scalloped skirt. The neckline of the dress were covered in swarovski pearls and crystals designed in floral pattern. She finished the look with a pair of Jimmy Choo Pumps in what looks like a velvety ocean blue shade. She didn’t attend without her silk face mask also designed by Markarian and a pair of matching leather gloves. The ocean blue colour was worn by FLOTUS to signify “trust, confidence, and stability,” according to the press release.
Is the overall look a Miss or a Fashion Statement? – The tweed trend and the velvet collar and cuffs is what what makes this look to standout not to talk of the colour shade and what it represents. The overall outfit is occassion appropriate and it’s a Fashion Statement to us here at Covet.
Kamala Harris who became the first female, first Black and first South Asian Vice President of the United States was also spotted wearing a a Christopher John Rogers head-to-toe purple longline suit look, she accessorised the look with a pearl necklace by Wilfredo Rosado. Christopher John Rogers who won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund about 2years ago — took it to Instagram saying: “Thank you, Madam Vice President. We are so honored and humbled to have played a small part in this historic moment.”
Harris was seen with her husband Dough Emhoff who was wearing a Ralph Lauren suit look. Their daughter on the other hand- Ella Emhoff was also surprisingly a style star. Harris’s step daughter and a student at Parsons School of Design — stole the Capitol fashion spotlight at the Inauguration wearing a plaid Miu Miu coat. Ella’s look featured a coat with statement shoulders embellished in crystals and an oversized embroidered collar. She wore a Batsheva dress underneath the coat and finished it with a simple black headband from Loeffler Randall. The look? a fashion icon!
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris took the oath office on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol.
The next person who stole the sartorial spotlight at the inauguration was the former first lady –Michelle Obama. She was wearing a plum-coloured look that featured high-waisted, wide-leg pants, a cosy turtleneck, and a floor-length coat, cinched with a gold belt designed by Sergio Hudson styled by Meredith Koop . She completed the look with black suede Stuart Weitzman boots, a black Christy Rilling face mask, and black leather gloves. The plum look says power, a woman’s power. We all know Michelle Obama with her never miss fashion moments during her office, but this plum power roll-neck look says i’m a modern superwoman who is still in the game. She finished the look with her iconic volumnious hairstyle styled by hairstylist Yene Damtew.
As per if this was a Fashion Statement or a Mute? Well, we all know the answer – It’s a loud Fashion Statement moment and yes from Covet.
We can’t ignore Lady gaga’s iconic moment when she performed at the inauguration wearing a custom-made Schiaparelli Haute Couture, designed by Daniel Roseberr. The look featured a voluminous, red silk faille skirt and fitted cashmere navy blue jacket. What was loved in the whole look was the jacket that was adorned with an oversized golden brooch in the shape of a dove. The overall look did not dissappoint, so was her vocals when she sang the national anthem at Joe Biden’s swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday. It’s a fashion statement moment, yes and yes again to the overall look.
Another performer who was spotted at the event was Jennifer Lopez. Jlo was spotted wearing a white silk ruffled high-neck blouse, paired with sequined palazzo trouser and a long tweed coat all by Chanel styled by Rob Zangardi. She accessorised the look with Chanel earings, bracelet and belt. She performed the songs “This Land Is Your Land” and “America the Beautiful.” The shoes weren’t so visible but the whole look is inauguration appropriate, love the all white themed look from the colour of the flag and it’s a yess fashion statment moment.
