Dior a French luxury fashion house part of the world’s largest luxury group – LVMH is said to collaborate with South African designer Thebe Magugu – a young designer based in Johannesburg. Thebe Magugu whose work is very known among the best luxury retailers like Matchesfashion, Net-a-porter, Yoox e.t.c. including Dior who is known for its high-fashion designs and has been around for over 70 years.
According to WWD, the french brand is collaborating with the African brand in aid of the Charlize Theron African Outreach Project, a charity that supports South African youth. The capsule to be released by both brands – Dior and Thebe Magugu is said to be a limited edition collection, which will be available to shop across Dior’s boutiques in New York, Paris, and Los Angeles from October 27th, 2022.
Dior’s creative director said in a released statement;
“I thought it was natural to think of a project which also gave visibility to this young generation of designer[s]. It felt like a more meaningful way to envision our collaboration.”
The collaboration between Thebe Magugu and Dior is known to be Thebe’s high-profile teamwork yet, although the South African designer is known to have worked with brands like AZ factory – a collaboration that featured classic asymmetric pleats in midi skirts, prints e.t.c. It’s also known that his second-year assignment when in LISOF fashion school was to interpret Christian Dior’s New work, an assignment that has now turned out to be a major collaboration.
Magugu’s collaboration with Dior birthed something explicit and beautiful for both brands with their own signature in the designs, it’s like the enjoyment of both worlds to fashion lovers. The designs did not lack pleats found in the asymmetric midi-length skirt, two women holding hands logo crafted on a simple t-shirt, and the classic Dior book bag (something that represents sisterhood – an emblem of Magugu’s label), – Magugu’s signature designs.
Magugu said in an interview:
“I’m from a small mining town called Kimberly, a place which sometimes is completely overlooked on certain maps. But even there people are very familiar with Christian Dior,” The flaring skirt, meanwhile, is “a beautiful pairing between my universe and Maria’s universe,” he said. “At Dior, I’ve always loved when she’s done the full-circle skirts. I’ve looked at those things forever.”
Dior’s monogram is also not missing from the capsule collection, this was found in a bucket hat, book tote bag, e.t.c. Chiuri continued in her statement; “We went from a silhouette with a Bar jacket to a printed T-shirt — an interesting take on this emblematic look, which truly connects both of our approaches.”
