Early this year Pharell Williams was announced as the new creative director of Louis Vuitton, and we all looked forward to what the music mogul who serves as the new replacement to Virgil Abloh has to offer.
The time has now come to see what Pharell’s creative skill is all about, the Spring 2024 collection was not disappointing Pharell went into the brand’s archive and used the house’s classic ‘Pixelated Damier’ prints to make pieces that are so Louis Vuitton but with Pharell update.
There were checkerboard bags in Louis Vuitton style, also in trousers suit co-ords, along with shorts suit co-ords, sticking to the brand’s simplified designs but as the show goes on, some designs grew into urban maximalism that feature vintage ‘movie-like’ prints written in Louis Vuitton lettering, oversized jackets, baggy trousers in a match set and in leather fabric.
There were also pixelated Damier prints in camouflage, this design expanded into shoes, jackets, bags, suit look, and travel boxes. When the travel boxes were sighted in this print, the first thought was if it will be the new classic everyone would love to lay their hands on, but I don’t think so, I believe they are trendy pieces we will love for now, and then go back to the old cult classic ones when done.
According to WWD, Pharell said in a statement: “I knew that I wanted to really lean into the Damier, something that hadn’t had such a great concentration in it, and we did so by using the Damier as a platform and as a new artistic discipline, and we have some really interesting expressions,”
When looking into the collection again, there were the transparent Jacauard-like pixelated damier print short suit look in grey, beige taupe etc, they looked so beautiful and wished they were extended into bags, shoes, travel boxes etc, this would have had a more staying power and possibly the must-have by everyone. We also have the kitschy sunglasses which are on trend right now.
Finally the color palette range from army green, black, mustard yellow, burgundy, pastel blue, etc mostly in checkerboard, pixelated damier, and plaid prints. Although, not sure how long Pharell will remain the brand’s creative director, we can say he is a good replica of Vigil Abloh, and the big shoe size left by him is truly a perfect fit for Pharell, his first campaign featured pregnant Rihanna showcasing the fashion house’s Spring 2024 bags. This was announced on Thursday and it looks like a great future for the brand despite the loss of Virgil Abloh.
